About Sanctuary
Sanctuary is owned by RE/MAX, LLC co-founders, Dave and Gail Liniger.
In the late 1980’s, Mr. and Mrs. Liniger submitted a cash offer for the purchase of land that is now Sanctuary. They were planning on moving their Arabian horse breeding operation from Michigan to Colorado. This offer was declined and the horses remained in Michigan. In the early 1990’s, Dave and Gail Liniger began playing golf and fell in love with the sport. Shortly thereafter, they received a call from the sellers asking if they would still like to purchase the land as they had not received any other acceptable offers. Mr. and Mrs. Liniger agreed to purchase the property. Now golfers, they felt the land might be too rugged for the horses but that it would make a really cool golf course. Friend and golf course architect, Jim Engh was hired to design the golf course. The day after closing, construction of the golf course began in February of 1995.
Mr. and Mrs. Liniger had built a golf course but they weren’t sure what they were going to do with it. They didn’t want members and they didn’t want a public golf course. Mr. Liniger discovered a typical golf event generated $20,000 to $30,000 for charity due to the high fees associated with securing a golf course. Dave and Gail Liniger began to realize that their golf course could be used as a resource to the community to raise significant funds.
In 1997, 11 charitable organizations were invited to host a golf event at Sanctuary. Mr. and Mrs. Liniger challenged each organization to raise more than $100,000 at their one-day golf event. Today, Sanctuary hosts 29 charity golf events each summer. Mr. and Mrs. Liniger support each of these organizations by donating the golf course; they have never charged a green fee!
The golf course is played exclusively by invitation or through one of the charity events but the clubhouse and pavilion are available to the public for special events.
Sanctuary Gives Back
Sanctuary was conceived as a golf experience that would gracefully balance exclusivity with accessibility. Play is not limited by membership but by linking tournaments and other events to the support of charitable organizations devoted to the arts, children, health care, and crisis management.
The philosophy of stewardship, which created Sanctuary, has enabled it to nurture some of our community’s most valued non-profit organizations. Success of the concept has exceeded all expectations. To date 596 charity event have generated more than 131 million net dollars to directly benefit the many constituents they serve.
